On <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23NGMHAAD&amp;src=typed_query\">#NGMHAAD<\/a> we honor the lives of cis and trans men who deserve love and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"National Gay Men&#039;s HIV\/AIDS Awareness Day | #NGMHAAD\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ocKXB9_7RuQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Daniela &#8220;Dani&#8221; Capistrano for TransLash Media<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-national-gay-men-s-hiv-aids-awareness-day\">About National Gay Men&#8217;s HIV\/AIDS Awareness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/translash.org\/?s=HIV\/AIDS\">HIV\/AIDS<\/a> is an important health issue for people of all genders, including cis and trans men. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/group\/gender\/transgender\/index.html\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC)<\/a> reports that in 2020, gay and bisexual men (and men who have sex with men) accounted for&nbsp;<strong>70 percent of new HIV infections<\/strong>&nbsp;in the U.S. It is estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/infectious-disease\/20190114\/study-14-of-transgender-women-3-of-transgender-men-have-hiv\">3% of transgender men<\/a> in the United States have HIV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/transgender-people-and-hiv-what-we-know\">HRC <\/a>explained, despite several years of research on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/entry\/hrc-issue-brief-hiv-aids-and-the-lgbt-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIV\/AIDS and the populations<\/a>&nbsp;it affects, we still know very little about transgender people and HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trans folks need to be included in all studies of HIV-affected communities and HIV\/AIDS advocates and more LGBTQ+ communities need to acknowledge the ways in which trans people may be uniquely affected by HIV. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/group\/gender\/transgender\/terminology.html\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing your status empowers you to take care of yourself. There are more HIV testing options than ever before; choose a test and choose to prioritize YOU! <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3KqVrdK\">Click here for details!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The History Of National Gay Men&#8217;s HIV\/AIDS Awareness Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.napwa.org\/index.html\">National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA)<\/a> launched this observance day to recognize the disproportionate impact of the epidemic on gay men. <strong>NAPWA<\/strong>&nbsp;is the oldest national AIDS organization, as well as the first network of people living with HIV\/AIDS in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trans-Affirming HIV\/AIDS Resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/risk\/transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC<\/a> has shared HIV\/AIDS risk factors tied to transphobia and the marginalization that transgender people face, which contribute to high infection rates. These risk factors include higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse, sex work, incarceration, homelessness, attempted suicide, unemployment, lack of familial support, violence, stigma and discrimination, limited health care access, and negative health care encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trans men have always been a part of HIV\/AIDS populations. The first known out gay trans man with AIDS in the United States was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/lou-sullivans-diaries-are-a-radical-testament-to-trans-happiness\">Lou Sullivan<\/a>,<\/strong> who passed away from complications in 1991. Lou <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makingqueerhistory.com\/articles\/201\">wrote<\/a> <strong>&#8220;they told me at the gender clinic that I could not live as a gay man, but it looks like I will die as one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trans men also deserve safe spaces to access HIV\/AIDS resources that honor their gender and sexuality.
