The day also highlights the HIV prevention, treatment, and care campaigns led by young people in the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocatesforyouth.org\/nyhaad\/\">Advocates for Youth<\/a>, a national nonprofit, leads NYHAAD and works to empower young people to protect themselves against&nbsp;HIV,&nbsp;sexually transmitted infections&nbsp;(STIs), and unintended pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is NYHAAD important?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s young people are the first generation who have never known a world without HIV and AIDS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC reports that in 2020, youth aged 13 to 24 made up 21% of the new HIV diagnoses in the United States. Young people living with HIV are the least likely of any age group to be retained in care and have a suppressed viral load. Addressing the impact of HIV on young people requires they have access to affirming, culturally-competent, and medically accurate resources and tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the NYHAAD Collective?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Youth HIV &amp; AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD) Collective is comprised of youth activists leading HIV prevention, treatment, and care campaigns in their communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The ABCs of HIV | Human Rights Campaign + Advocates for Youth\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q3VKFY-s6lQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their campaigns highlight the challenges faced by young people living with and impacted by HIV, offer insight on how they combat stigma and discrimination on local, state, and federal levels, and enhance the awareness among physicians, policymakers, and youth-serving organization staff, etc. about the existing disparities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Preventing HIV and STIs | Human Rights Campaign + Advocates for Youth\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xP326kTCSM4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to HIV &amp; AIDS education and resources, Advocates for Youth also shares trans-affirming education about gender. The two-minute animated video below was created in partnership between the Human Rights Campaign Foundations\u2019 Welcoming Schools program and Advocates for Youth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What is Gender?&#8221; helps early learners understand the complexities of gender, gender identity, gender expression and gender stereotypes in a developmentally appropriate way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is gender? | Human Rights Campaign + Advocates for Youth\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qjVKiWN4E1g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding gender helps children develop healthy identities and supports an environment of respect and belonging for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#ProtectTransKids<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HIV\/AIDS&nbsp;is an important health issue for people of all genders, including cis and trans men.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/group\/gender\/transgender\/index.html\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC)<\/a>&nbsp;reports that in 2020, gay and bisexual men (and men who have sex with men) accounted for&nbsp;<strong>70 percent of new HIV infections<\/strong>&nbsp;in the U.S. It is estimated that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/infectious-disease\/20190114\/study-14-of-transgender-women-3-of-transgender-men-have-hiv\">3% of transgender men<\/a>&nbsp;in the United States have HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/transgender-people-and-hiv-what-we-know\">HRC&nbsp;<\/a>explained, despite several years of research on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/entry\/hrc-issue-brief-hiv-aids-and-the-lgbt-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIV\/AIDS and the populations<\/a>&nbsp;it affects, we still know very little about transgender people and HIV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know even less about trans youth with HIV. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/policies\/data\/transgender-issue-brief.html\">One study<\/a> found that transgender youth were more likely to miss HIV care appointments if they were treated negatively because of their gender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the NYHAAD Campaign Demands?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a4 Increasing empathy and reducing stigma about HIV and its impact on young people on campus and in communities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a4 Affirming policies around HIV care, treatment, and prevention on campus and in communities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a4 Decriminalizing HIV<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a4 Accessing HIV services, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), on-campus and in communities without parental consent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a4 Updating sex education curricula, which includes medically accurate information about HIV<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Support the National Youth HIV &amp; AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD) Collective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/advocatesforyouth\">@Advocatesforyouth<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/mystoryoutloud\">@MyStoryOutLoud<\/a> on Instagram. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also follow them on X: <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/nyhaad\">@NYHAAD<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/advocatestweets\">@AdvocatesTweets<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mystoryoutloud\">@MyStoryOutLoud<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take Action Today<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Raise awareness on April 10th about #NYHAAD and Let\u2019s Stop HIV Together by sharing<em> Let&#8217;s Stop HIV Together<\/em> infographics on social media.
