As the\u00a0Democratic<\/a>\u00a0National Convention prepares to kick off in\u00a0Chicago<\/a>\u00a0next week, the\u00a0Human Rights Campaign<\/a>\u00a0is set to bringLGBTQ<\/a>-centered programming to the forefront. Starting on Sunday, HRC will lead efforts to ensure that\u00a0LGBTQ<\/a>+ voices are both heard and celebrated, offering a vibrant contrast to the often hostile rhetoric aimed at the community by\u00a0Republicans<\/a>\u00a0in today\u2019s political landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brandon Wolf, the national press secretary for HRC, shared his excitement with The Advocate<\/em> about the convention and the organization\u2019s ambitious plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe energy is real,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cPeople really are excited, people really are hopeful, they\u2019re feeling inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This energy, he explained, stems from the surge in enthusiasm that has gripped the Democratic Party since PresidentJoe Biden<\/u><\/a> announced in July that he would not be standing for reelection, passing the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris<\/u><\/a>, who has chosen Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota<\/u><\/a> as her running mate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolf took a moment to heap praise on Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Biden does not get enough credit for the work that he has done broadly,\u201d Wolf said. \u201cHe\u2019s been a remarkable president who\u2019s gotten an immense amount of good done for the American people in a very short amount of time\u2014pulling us out of a once-in-a-generation pandemic, putting the economy back together when it was on the brink, and advancing equality and freedom for people, especially LGBTQ+ people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HRC\u2019s programming will begin with \u201cQueering Sunday,\u201d an event taking over Chicago\u2019s North Halsted District \u2014 a popular LGBTQ+ neighborhood. \u201cEverybody loves a good Sunday fun day with the LGBTQ+ community,\u201d Wolf remarked. It will serve as a joyous kickoff to a week packed with panels, discussions, and gatherings to mobilize the LGBTQ+ community in the lead-up to November\u2019s election, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, HRC will host a creator studio at McCormick Place, where attendees can share their stories, sign up to volunteer, and pick up some exclusive Harris-Walz merchandise. According to Wolf, the studio will be a hub of activity, providing a space for attendees to engage directly with the campaign and each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HRC\u2019s Monday\u2019s LGBTQ+ convention kickoff event will feature panels with prominent voices like actors Wilson Cruz and Sophia Bush, journalists Eugene Daniels and Charlotte Clymer, influencer and author Blair Imani, and\u00a0Delaware<\/a>\u00a0State Sen. Sarah McBride, who is poised to be the first\u00a0transgender<\/a>\u00a0person elected to Congress. The panels will explore how to engage the LGBTQ+ community digitally and what messaging is most effective in today\u2019s charged political environment. Daniels and HRC vice president of Strategic Outreach & Engagement Nik Harris will host the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most high-profile convention speeches will happen during the evening events at the United Center, the primary venue for the convention\u2019s prime-time programming. Biden will speak Monday night to open the convention with a tribute to his presidency. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton<\/a> will also address the convention on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday night, former President\u00a0Barack Obama<\/u><\/a>\u00a0is expected to take the stage, followed by former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday, who will deliver remarks before Walz is formally introduced as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee. Harris will close out the convention with her acceptance speech on Thursday night, solidifying her position as the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The convention will also feature a series of DNC Constituency Caucus and Council meetings, providing a platform for various communities to discuss and highlight critical issues. The LGBTQ+ Caucus meetings will feature prominent speakers such asMassachusetts<\/u><\/a> Gov. Maura Healey on Monday and McBride on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday brings an invitation-only event co-hosted by HRC and Planned Parenthood. This partnership, Wolf explained, is a natural fit. \u201cFor us, it\u2019s \u2018we show up\u2019; for them, it\u2019s \u2018we decide.\u2019 That\u2019s kind of the message, right? We show up, and we decide what happens in this election cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolf said HRC\u2019s programming will conclude with house parties organized by the organization\u2019s more than 50 steering committees nationwide. He explained that these gatherings are more than just social events; they\u2019re strategic efforts to build momentum and ensure that the energy generated at the convention translates into action at the polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harris has a long and storied record of support for the LGBTQ+ community, which Wolf was keen to highlight. \u201cKamala Harris has been a champion for LGBTQ+ people for her entire career\u2014boldly, unapologetically,\u201d Wolf said. He recalled her early advocacy, including officiating\u00a0some of the first same-sex marriages<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in the country in 2004 as\u00a0San Francisco<\/u><\/a>\u00a0district attorney and refusing to defend\u00a0California\u2019s<\/u><\/a>\u00a0discriminatory\u00a0Prop 8<\/u><\/a>\u00a0as attorney general. \u201cThis is a person who\u2019s been a champion for LGBTQ+ people throughout her career,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harris\u2019s deep connection with the LGBTQ+ community was on full display during a Pride Month<\/u><\/a> reception at the vice president\u2019s residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.<\/u><\/a>, in June, where she hosted a celebration honoring LGBTQ+ lives and progress. At that event, Wolf introduced Harris<\/u><\/a>, calling her \u201ca leader who has always chosen to stand up for us.\u201d Harris, in turn, spoke about the importance of remembering the struggles and sacrifices of the LGBTQ+ community while persisting in the fight for equality and justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A captivating aspect of Harris\u2019s energized campaign has been her embrace of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s powerful anthem, \u201cFreedom,\u201d as her campaign theme song. The song, which has become synonymous with empowerment and resistance, was given special permission by Beyonc\u00e9 herself to be used by the Harris-Walz campaign\u2014a rare move by the superstar, known for her selective music licensing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolf touched on a lighter, yet equally exciting, possibility: a rumored surprise appearance by Beyonc\u00e9 at the convention. Kelley Robinson, HRC\u2019s president, has been open about her admiration for the superstar, as she told<\/u><\/a>The Advocate<\/em> in a June interview. Robinson, a self-proclaimed \u201c\u00fcber-fan,\u201d described how Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s work, especially her Renaissance<\/em> tour, has been a powerful celebration of Black queer culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
